Mega marathoning
Hello fine feathered friends! After a hiatus I am back for more living and more doing, all the while giving you guys food for both thought and action. The holidays have come and gone as have a Mardi Gras season and you all may be wondering what I’ve been up to these last 8 weeks.
Well to start, I was running, and a lot. This year marked my second attempt at the Mountain Mist 50k, and I wanted to go in a little more prepared than in 2011. This race is billed as “The Premier Trail Run in the South,” and it did not disappoint. With almost 3500 ft of elevation change, flat landers like myself feel the challenge early and often on this rocky and very technical trail race. Their website reads “Expect anything…including cancellation due to inclement weather (the mountain can ice over)! Temperatures can range from 10 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. This course consists of extremely rocky mountain trails, mud, and creek crossings. Not to mention the 3526 feet of climbing!! There is a vertical climb on the course that requires the use of your upper body.” Here is a link to the elevation chart. The goal here is survival, and since I am indeed typing this, I did just that.
The weekend prior to this was The Louisiana Marathon Weekend. As one of the founders of this race and current course director and 5k/Kids race director, this event really lets our city shine. With 4500 runners form 47 states and 12 countries, it is fast becoming a must do regional and national race. A Louisiana Running Festival on par with the many other festivals in our state.
Finally, this winter brought out a personal challenge amongst friends. The FRESHJUNKIE 365. 365 days in a row of fitness. 20 mins a day, with the only requirement being that it is exercise. If you have to ask, it isn’t. Want in? Start today and email me at [email protected] to join in. It’s free and will hopefully help folks keep accountable. If nothing else, if you try it, and miss 2 days a week you will still be doing something active 5 days a week, which for most is an improvement.
