Man meets salon – Salons aren’t just for women anymore. We sent style blogger Candra-Eloise Burges to take a peek.
While it’s accepted for a woman to take no less than two hours in the hair salon, it is expected for a man to take no more than about 30 minutes. However, contrary to popular belief, there are probably more hair products on a man’s bathroom counter these days than there are on a woman’s. Evolve Gallery in Bocage Village is a prime example of the … well … evolution.
Walking into Evolve Gallery in Baton Rouge, you might see more men than women in the waiting area. Barber Michelle Quaid (pictured) says her clientele is 70% male and ranges from businessmen to politicians to average Joes, with services ranging from simple cuts to coloring. “My clients will send me photos and even DVR’d screen shots of new styles that they want to try,” she says. “I think I have all the prima donnas in Baton Rouge.”
Evolve owner and lead stylist Jason Keller has created what he calls a “studio” model of salon, which is actually an art gallery that also does hair care. It hosts art and jewelry shows as well as events for other Baton Rouge artists. “Men want an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of home or the office, and that’s just what we offer.”

With celebrities like Ryan Gosling and Hugh Jackman daring to inaugurate hair removal into their regular routines, perhaps the time is nearing when even conservative men will follow suit. With more men pressing women to wax, perhaps a balance is desirable.
At Zanella’s Wax Bar in Baton Rouge, you’ll not only find a staff committed to making your waxing experience the most amazing ever–you’ll also find a lot of men. While salons and spas aim to accommodate waxing as an option, Zanella’s Wax Bar takes waxing a step further: it’s a culture. And if you’re the type of fellow that wants to keep his waxing commitment from the masses, the environment at Zanella’s will be preferred over a room full of salon women guessing what you’re in for.
“I hired a staff like me to have a passion for what they do and it shows.” says Owner Erica Zanella-Ourso. “Our male clientele is about 25%, but it continues to grow more and more each day. They range from men in their early 20s to men in their mid-70s. Some are just chest, back and maybe brow waxing clients, while others go for the whole body!”
