Making it country

Contemporary country music’s next star may be the voice of Denham Springs High School student Nicole Johnson. Last November the 15-year-old became a local sensation overnight when her Christmas song, “If Jesus Came Back,” blew up across several radio stations inside of a week. She and her mother spent last month in Nashville, making contacts and angling for a big career in music.

“I had producers, publishers, and writers messaging me over MySpace, so we scheduled about six or seven meetings to decide,” Johnson says. Since then, Johnson has recorded three songs written by writers of No. 1 hits, and has starred in her first music video. “We’re going to do a 5-song EP instead of releasing a whole album,” she adds. Nicole feels the smaller portion will accommodate Internet-related changes to the music industry, even as she finds ways to adjust to her hectic new schedule; the schedule of someone trying to make it big.

“I’ve got some really good songs I’m about to start [working on],” Johnson says. “It’s definitely happened really fast.” myspace.com/musicnicolejohnson
