Maceo Parker at the Manship Theatre
The Manship Theatre will host legendary saxophonist Maceo Parker on March 2nd. Parker serves as the missing link between some of the greatest funk, soul and jazz artists of the 20th century, having served as the backbone of both James Brown’s famous band and George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic.
During the 1960’s, Maceo made a name for himself as one of the most name-checked and visible members of the powerhouse rhythm section known as The JB’s along with trumpet player Fred Wesley, and his solos are prominently featured on almost all of Brown’s best known recordings. Maceo joined forces with George Clinton and Bootsy Collins in Parliament Funkadelic in 1975, and spent the next ten years with the band before reuniting with Brown in 1985.
He has also recorded with artists like Prince, De La Soul and Keith Richards. Parker has been touring as a solo artist since the early 90’s and has released 13 albums under his own name since then. Over the years, Parker’s intense, high energy live shows have become his calling card and have made him a perennial staple at music festivals and in college towns around the world.
