Locals pay tribute to Frank Zappa

Two groovy Baton Rouge bands will provide their own twist on a musical legend. Captain Green and Righteous Buddha will pay tribute to Frank Zappa Friday night at The Varsity. Doors open at 8 p.m. The show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 online and $12 the day of the show. Zappa was an American musician who composed jazz, rock, orchestral and other works. His career spanned 30 years. He is ranked as of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time,” according to Rolling Stone. Some of Zappa’s most popular albums include We’re Only in It for the Money and Over-Nite Sensationwith The Mothers of Invention and the solo Hot Rats. During his lifetime, he released more than 60 albums. In 1995, he was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.

Jive Flamingo presents Jazz Night. Upright bassist John Madere performs at Mud and Water with Reagan Mitchell on alto sax, Oscar Rossignoli on piano, Brad Walker on tenor sax and Marcello Benetti on drums. Doors open at 8 p.m. $8.

Rock N Rowe. The Carbon Copy Band performs in this edition of the free concert series at Perkins Rowe’s Town Square Park. 6 p.m.-9 p.m.
Denton Hatcher, Ryan Harris, Christian Lee Hustson. Local singer-songwriters perform in the side bar at Chelsea’s Café. 7 p.m.
Annie Girl and the Flight, Brian Bell. Singer-songwriters perform at Mud and Water. Doors open at 9 p.m.
Prom Date, Rareluth, Minos the Saint. Celebrate the release of Prom Date’s newest video “X My Heart” at Chelsea’s Café. 10:30 p.m. $7. The video will premiere on 225 Thursday.

Jodi James, Caleb Caudle, Ryan Harris. Hear local singer-songwriters at Red Star. 9 p.m. $7.
The Millburns, West Without. Local indie rock bands perform at Chelsea’s Café. 10:30 p.m.

Underhill Family Orchestra, Ciccada Rhythm. Appalachian jam bands perform Mud and Water. 9 p.m.
Glory, Debris, Henry T. Fifth. Local reggae, rock, hip-hop and dub bands perform at Culture Reggae Club (450 Oklahoma St.). Doors open at 9 p.m. $6.
Ghost Foot, Paper Ghost, Dead Talk. Baton Rouge alternative rock bands perform at Chelsea’s Café. 10:30 p.m.
The Chee Weez. Enjoy covers of your favorite songs at The Varsity. Doors open at 8 p.m. The show starts at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 online and $15 at the door.
