Little Birds (new on Blu-ray)

From the producer of two of the best dramas of the past few years—the early Ryan Gosling vehicles Half Nelson and Blue Valentine—comes the little Sundance hit that could, Little Birds, new this week on Blu-ray. Rising English actress Juno Temple portrays a teen stifled among the abandoned trailer parks, empty swimming pools and burnt-out strip malls of the Salton Sea, a former new-money oasis gone bust in Southern California.

Swept up in the adventures of a group of boys that take them to the glittering lights of Los Angeles, Temple’s wayward and seeking teen is introduced to a life of scams, theft and petty crime. But when their next scheme involves using her as bait for a big score, she must decide how far she’s willing to go to feel grown up and escape her broken home life while her best friend tries desperately to protect her and get out alive.

Little Birds is the directorial debut of actor and former musician Elgin James. Kate Bosworth and Leslie Mann co-star. Rated R.
