Turner says he felt the timing was right to showcase original music in Baton Rouge. He also wants the club to pay homage to his friend, Tabby Thomas, the blues musician who ran Tabby’s Blues Box and passed away recently.
Turner added that the venue has a “hang out” feel to remind patrons how the local music clubs used to be and allow artists to try out new material.
“I wanted it to have a contemporary Chitlin’ Circuit vibe and remind people of what it was like when I started out and how guys like me were musically born in Baton Rouge,” he says.
Turner believes smaller venues like Tabby’s and others across the country have allowed musicians the space and freedom to hone their craft. He feels his listening room could be another one of those venues.
“I can’t believe how fortunate I’ve been to play original music across America for the last 25 years,” Turner says. “It’s all because places like this existed—places where music legends nurtured aspiring artists, giving them the courage to continue and grow their craft.”
