“I just bought Josh Ritter’s new record, The Beast In Its Tracks. He’s brilliant, as always. Word on the Nashville street—I’ll be move there soon—is that Johnny Depp is living there and working on a project with Jack White, and I’m definitely interested in whatever comes of that collaboration.”

“My pick for this Summer is Captain Murphy, a progressive hip-hop experiment being put out by Brainfeeder records, home to L.A. producer Flying Lotus and upcoming artists with new music like Thundercat, Lapalux, and the Underachievers. It’s very fun to listen to for any occasion and features appearances from members of Odd Future, like Tyler the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt. It’s psychedelic-electro-hi-fi-soul mixed with a fresh serving of hip hop sweetness.”

“A good Baton Rouge band called Secret Smoker just put out a record called Terminal Architecture. I love the amount of passion they are somehow able to put into every note, every drumbeat, every shouted chorus, and they are able to do it with a minimalist approach. They are, after all, a trio, and the often-sparse guitar work is so well crafted it packs an unexpected emotional punch. Another recent record I like is from The Hitchhiker, called King of the Highway. That band is all about the craft of songwriting. Tightly wound verses perfectly lead to brilliantly woven choruses, and Luis—originally from Venezuela—has a voice that ties all the pieces together like some metal-tough piece of silk.”
