Lend a hand – Opportunities to help out around town this weekend

There are several opportunities this weekend to help out with the arts in Baton Rouge and the betterment of our struggling communities—two things that are big topics on the Smart City blog. Read on for more information, and let us know in the comments below about other events and causes coming up around the city that need volunteers!

The 15th wall of the Walls Project is going to be an all-hands-on-deck event. The Walls Project, which has beautified the sides of buildings in downtown Baton Rouge and elsewhere, all with a mission of improving quality of life via public art, is focusing on a Mid City park on Saturday.

The “Community Mural Paint Day,” one of many the organization has coordinated with the help of Elevator Projects, BREC and others, will paint a mural at BREC’s Gayosa Park at 2129 Gayosa St.

The event is 8 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information, email [email protected].

Theatre Baton Rouge, which recently wrapped up a production of Annie, is looking for volunteers to help clean up the space, paint and do other small repair jobs during a fix-up day Saturday, 8 a.m.-noon.

The local theater organization is sprucing up for the annual Beaux Arts Ball for volunteers, and in preparation for the next season. Find out more information here.

The Scotlandville Mobile Pantry, a project of the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank and Together Baton Rouge, returns to St. Michael Episcopal Church, 1620 77th Ave.

Volunteers begin arriving at 7:45 a.m. Saturday morning to help distribute food items to the hungry. During past mobile pantry days, they’ve helped hundreds of residents and distributed thousands of pounds of fresh food. For more information on how to participate, contact Edgar Cage at [email protected].
