Literary legend Ernest Gains was born in Cherie Quarters, the original slave quarter at River Lake Plantation, and he grew up there until he was 15. Ruth Laney presents a lecture about the place and people surrounding this tin-roofed cypress cabin in Pointe Coupee Parish, mentioned in his books The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and A Lesson Before Dying. 2 p.m. Saturday at the Carville branch library.
