LaLou closes over franchise dispute

Popular brunch and dinner spot LaLou is now shuttered, due to a dispute with the Another Broken Egg Café franchise. The Old Hammond Highway restaurant had been an Another Broken Egg location until owner Mark Dixon rebranded it as LaLou in August 2010. Dixon told 225 Dine at the time that he made the change because he was having trouble attracting a dinner crowd. But he kept many of the brunch items. “Everything is going to stay the same,” Dixon said at the time. “The only changes are that the menu is getting bigger and we’ve got a new logo.” Another Broken Egg of America Inc. sued Dixon, saying he was violating a non-compete clause to not open another restaurant within 10 miles of the location for two years. The chain also charged he used its trade secrets in the operation of LaLou. Last week, Dixon was ordered to close the restaurant. Plans are to put the building up for sale.—Timothy Boone
