‘Know’ it all

Director James L. Brooks practically wrote the language of the modern romantic comedy, and this week his latest How Do You Know is new on DVD. Playing a former athlete approaching 30, Reese Witherspoon stars as a woman who believes herself to be past her prime in a lot of ways, and begins to feel pressure to get married and have a child. But when an old friend who’s under federal investigation for a business deal gone bad comes back into her life, she finds herself torn between Paul Rudd’s quirky interest in her and her current boyfriend, Owen Wilson’s laid back but big-mouthed pro baseball player. Jack Nicholson co-stars. Rated PG-13.
