Kiss my ‘Grit’

Set in the 1880s, a teenage girl enlists the help of a salty, hard-drinking U.S. Marshal and a Texas Ranger to find her father’s killer in the Coen Brother’s Western adventure True Grit. New on DVD and Blu-ray this week, the Oscar-nominated film is adapted from the same Charles Portis novel that spawned the Oscar-winning John Wayne movie in 1969 and stars Jeff Bridges as the nefarious one-eyed U.S. Marshal “Rooster” Cogburn and Matt Damon as cocksure, motor-mouthed Texas Ranger LeBoeuf. Triggering their journey of reckoning is newcomer Hailee Steinfeld in her first major film role. Steinfeld plays the courageous Mattie Ross, a girl looking for the deadly killer Tom Chaney, played by a gravel-tongued Josh Brolin. Dakin Matthews and Barry Pepper co-star. Rated R.
