Keeping it off

Q: I have recently lost a lot of weight, and I am afraid that I will not be able to maintain my new size. I am already getting bored with my diet and exercise program. How can I keep up my motivation and stay off the slippery slope back to my unhealthy ways?
—Christine Koontz

A: Christine, congratulations on your decision to be a healthier “you.” It can seem difficult to maintain weight loss, especially if it was completely obtained through a strict diet. But the good news is, with a combination of exercise and healthy eating habits, your new body can stay.

First, find inspiration around you. Surround yourself with positive images—on your refrigerator, headboard, steering wheel, desk and social media feed.

Make your exercise fun and social. Meet up with friends or a trainer to keep it fun.

Make healthy eating and exercise your normal routine, just like brushing your teeth.

Track your weight, measurements, food intake and exercise. Keep a food diary and fitness journal to monitor your habits.

Use new apps and even video games. The Internet is a wealth of information and support.

Keep accountable through social media. Post your progress and pictures so friends can offer encouragement.

Set a goal. Try a fun run, like one of the “color” or “mud” runs.

Enjoy your food and don’t deprive yourself, just be reasonable with your intake. If you know you went overboard with dessert, do some extra stairs, push-ups or go for a longer walk.

Always eat breakfast and eat at regular intervals, so your body can trust that it is being fueled.

Your body, while it can seem complicated, isn’t all that complex. Be kind to it, feed it good things, make it do fun stuff, keep it clean, give it ample sunlight, give it restorative rest, dress it up and take it out on occasion—and it will love you back!
