Jill Martinez’s Spanish Town living room

Handmade quilt. My grandmother made this quilt many years ago. I love the funky fabric choices—the leftover scraps from her own wardrobe—as well as the vibrant color palette she chose to work with.

Upholstered chair. The over-exaggerated lines and high back of this chair remind me of furniture only found in the whimsical world of Alice in Wonderland. That’s how decorating happens for me. It is a conglomerate of objects and images that elevates me beyond the everyday.

Vintage windows. This house was built sometime in the late 1800s, so it has very little insulation but a lot of extra charm. I enjoy pushing open these old windows on breezy, sunny days. It’s a romantic sensation that transports me back in time.

Diverse lighting. The first order of business upon moving into this apartment was to remove all of the bulbs from the overhead fixtures. Upon entering this room, there are approximately five lights I turn on to set the mood—a small price to pay to maintain a relaxing ambiance.

Painting. This painting by artist John Norris was purchased at his thesis exhibition a few years ago. The theme of the show included an original, full-length soundtrack, which gave life to his quirky, inanimate objects.
