Jack the Giant Slayer (in theaters Friday)

This isn’t your grandfather’s beanstalk. The classic fairy tale of an inquisitive youth and an overgrown legume-fiend gets a serious and action-packed update in this epic adventure from X-Men director Bryan Singer this Friday.

Nicholas Hoult (who played the blue big foot Beast in X-Men: First Class) stars as Jack, a young farm boy who helps open a gateway between the world of Men and the realm of the Giants.

His discovery reignites an ancient war between the two adversarial races, and he finds himself unwittingly at the center of the fight to defending his home and protect the life of the princess he loves.

Among the mountainous special effects are supporting performances by Ewan McGregor, Ian McShane and Stanley Tucci. Co-written by The Usual Suspects and The Wolverine scribe Christopher McQuarrie. Rated PG-13.
