As the iron fist behind law enforcement in the United States for a bulk of the 20th Century, J. Edgar Hoover built the FBI from the ground up, challenged both the mob and the Kennedy clan and, like an American Gestapo, hunted down and monitored anyone known to associate with communists by any means necessary. Director Clint Eastwood’s new biopic, J. Edgar, is new on Blu-ray this week and stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the FBI head in his younger years on up through to his death in a script by Milk Oscar-winner Dustin Lance Black. While Hoover amasses power, and enemies, he may have his own secrets to hide as he grapples with maintaining his crime-fighting empire. Dame Judi Dench, Armie Hammer and Naomi Watts co-star. Rated R.
