Into the psyche – Elevator Projects organizing large-scale installation in October

Returning with another pop-up art event, the artist collective Elevator Projects is planning a big installation in a downtown warehouse Oct. 25. Not surprisingly, the nighttime event, dubbed The Asylum, is going to be loosely tied to the Halloween season.

“It’s going to be sort of a psychological installation,” says Elevator Projects’ Raina Wirta. “It’s not going to be a gory haunted house, but more of a perceptive experience on a large scale.”

That includes performances happening throughout the warehouse’s 18,000 square feet of space, sound art installations—the building has a few huge walk-in refrigerators with some excellent, echoing acoustics—characters acting like they are in an insane asylum, live music and more. The warehouse, known as the Brickyard Building, is located at 1010 Nicholson Dr. just south of the interstate overpass.

Elevator Projects is taking proposals until the end of the day today from artists who want to present works at the large-scale event. Wirta says they are looking for “psychologically jarring [and] thought-provoking” works ranging from installation to performance, lights, sculpture, interactivity and two-dimensional forms of media.

The collective is also hoping to capitalize on the proximity of the site to the 13th Gate, though their plan is for an experience more mind-bending than frightening.

“We’re hoping we can make it a destination for the evening and give people a surreal experience,” Wirta says.
