Hurricane season starts now
Save the beer for tailgating, the margaritas for Cinco de Mayo and the white Russians for bowling. For this festival season, try a drink that’s worthy of the outdoor parties you’ll attend and the jams you’ll be grooving to. Although there’s little chance of finding a Hurricane in Baton Rouge to rival the famous drinks at Pat O’Briens, if you’re missing those from last month’s Mardi Gras celebrations, find a worthy challenger at Zippy’s on Perkins Road near the overpass. This small, open-air burrito and taco shop serves a Hurricane-like specialty drink called South of the Border, starting at $7 for a 20-ounce cup.
Using Pat O’Brien’s famously sweet Hurricane mix, the identity of the rum and Everclear blend is cleverly masked, just like the revelers on the floats moving by. The cool, icy texture makes the South of the Border a smooth and simple drink for our warming weather.
