Hot Dogs ala ‘Cart’
Shannon Collins and Karen Koprowski are best friends—as Koprowski says, “We’ve been through it all.” So when Koprowski mentioned her desire to go into business for herself with the unconventional idea of a hot dog cart, Collins was ready to jump in with both feet. Last month, the two BFFs launched Nice Dog Hot Dogs, which serves up Hebrew National sausages on sourdough hoagie buns and served with signature chili, sautéed onions and peppers, sauerkraut and more. With prices around under $5 for a hearty hot dog, the pair have been doing great business every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and weekends wherever they can park their “happy hot dog cart.” The “happy” isn’t just a slogan. The focus, according to Koprowski, is to make every interaction with customers as cheerful and pleasant as possible, as well as giving them something they can’t get at home. “I want people to be able to enjoy a hot dog that is really a treat,” Koprowski says. “A gourmet hot dog treat! Every time I make a hot dog, I’m truly proud to hand it over.” All the recipes are a result of months of experimenting, and they hope to have more carts rolling out soon, even though it is a second job for both women. “We don’t see ourselves slowing down any time soon,” Koprowski says.
