Honor your Mother
There are multiple events happening in May, from Cinco de Mayo celebrations to music festivals to Memorial Day to end-of-the-school-year graduations. However, the most important event we celebrate this month falls on May 12: Mother’s Day! This is the day we honor our moms and grandmothers, too.
Every person on Earth has a mother. When was the last time you called yours? Did you say, “I love you, Mom?” When was the last time you gave her a hug? When was the last time you emailed her or sent her a greeting card?
I don’t understand why we would leave out our grannies when they are always there for us, too. My grandmother was the rock of our family, and even though she has passed away, I still remember some of the lessons and wise sayings she taught me growing up.
My words won’t be enough to honor all mothers and grandmothers. However, I will try my best to give them all the credits and accolades they so deserve in the limited space I have.
These are women who give so much and sacrifice their own needs for their children. The first moment they test positive for pregnancy, the clock starts. These women want to safeguard their young. I remember every one of my wife’s pregnancies, and like all mothers, my wife was focused on making sure that the baby got first-rate pre-natal care while carrying the baby for nine months. The sacrifices are monumental. Then, after giving birth, they take care of the infant night and day. I could go on and on, but that fact is, in reality, little is done in comparison to give back and reward a mother’s love.
My mom is one great mother. She has sacrificed her entire life for all of her children. She has always been encouraging, compassionate and very loving to me. She is giving but firm. My father left us when I was 4 years old, so my mom did a pretty good job of being the father figure and mother—all at the same time.
On May 12, give your mom a big hug or give her a call and tell her that she is the greatest. If she has passed away, do something she would have loved or help support a cause for which she was passionate about. Call relatives and siblings and celebrate her with words of kindness and shared memories. But do not end it there. We should honor our mothers daily all throughout the year.
With Mother’s Day right around the corner, 225 spoke to five local moms who juggle demanding jobs and the demands of managing a family. They made us laugh and cry, and they passed on some amazing advice, too. Meet them here. And, please note, we want to make this an annual feature. So if there is a mom in Baton Rouge who you think we should write about, email us at [email protected]. And check out our June issue for a follow-up feature on devoted fathers.
The day before Mother’s Day, on May 11, join us for this year’s Head 2 Toe event at the Crowne Plaza. This is a great opportunity for women to spend focused time on good health and beauty. It is a day we designed for women to feel beautiful inside and out, learning about the latest technology and developments through seminars, salon demonstrations and services. We will pamper our attendees with chocolate-covered strawberries and more. Our breakfast will have giveaways worth more than $500 and a great speaker to leave everyone motivated. Doors open at 7:30 a.m., and the Jazz Champagne Breakfast starts at 8 a.m. Seminars begin at 9:30 a.m. To order tickets, click here.
There are very few groups of people who are taken for granted more than our servicemen and -women and our veterans of the Armed Forces. Memorial Day is a wonderful time with family and friends. It’s a long weekend away from work to relax and enjoy time with those we love. That is wonderful, but I’d like to challenge everyone this month to take a little time to do something kind for someone in the military. It could be as simple as picking up the phone and thanking them for their service. Or it could be taking them to lunch or sending them an anonymous gift. 225 contributor Michael J. Farrar, a member of the Louisiana National Guard, shares his own thoughts on Memorial Day and interviews several veterans for an Our City story here.
Turns out there’s as much to say about summer as there is to do during summer. This exciting season of family, friends and fun is almost upon us, and we thought it important to examine the most essential aspects of the season and celebrate what fills our summer in and around Baton Rouge with so much potential. Click here for the story that will help you make the most of this summer and have you crushing every minute of it.
Another great event Mother’s Day weekend is taking place on the beautiful grounds of the Rural Life Museum. For the first time, two great Baton Rouge institutions are coming together to produce a unique outdoor concert experience. On Saturday, May 11, the LSU Rural Life Museum will join the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra to bring our community the Symphony Pops at Rural Life. The V-Tones will join the Symphony for the second half of the evening as concertgoers enjoy wonderful music, food and wine under the stars. Check it out at brso.org.
