Heads up: Celebrate the legacy of Derek E. Gordon

The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge celebrates the life of Derek E. Gordon next week. Next Tuesday’s concert event at the Manship Theatre features music from jazz vocalists Kurt Elling and Vanessa Rubin, classical guitarist Berta Rojas and jazz pianist Fred Hersch. The event benefits the Derek E. Gordon Arts Fund and kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Tickets to the show and reception start at $75 and can be purchased here. A special exhibition from the Derek E. Thou, FVMES. The return of Baton Rouge’s heaviest band, upstairs at The Spanish Moon. $5. 7 p.m.
Stone Rabbits, Levee Daze, Moonsugar. Young rock bands perform at The Varsity. Tickets are $8 and are available here. Doors open at 8 p.m. Show starts at 9 p.m.

Ben Bell & The Stardust Boys. The local country and rockabilly band performs at Chelsea’s Café. 7 p.m.-9 p.m. No cover.
Rosco Bandana. The blues/Americana band performs at Chelsea’s Café. 10:30 p.m.
The Junior League. The New Orleans power pop and rock ‘n’ roll band performs at Mud and Water. 8 p.m.
Royal Cyclops Presents: The Farewell Local Songwriters’ Showcase. The final showcase of the local songwriter show at Backstreet Lounge (Map it!). The show will move to a different venue, starting Sept. 11. 7:30 p.m.
Age of Ashram, Wicked River Rising, Frequency Fetish. Hard rock at The Varsity. Tickets are $10 and available here. Doors open at 8 p.m. Show starts at 9 p.m.
Rock N Rowe. The Perkins Rowe concert series kicks off with a free performance from After 8. 6 p.m.

Jason Martin, Will Vance & The Kinfolk, Buttonhoof. Southern rock with a hint of country at Mud and Water. 9 p.m.
White Violet, Lee Bains III & The GloryFires. Critically-acclaimed out-of-town rock bands hit the stage at Chelsea’s Café. 10:30 p.m.
DJ Jubilee with Quickie Mart. The “King of Bounce” performs at The Spanish Moon. Tickets are $8 and available here and $10 at the door. Doors open at 9 p.m.

Those Howlings. The Austin rock band performs a free in-store show at Kerry Beary’s Atomic Pop Shop. 3 p.m.
