Gumbo weather at The Chimes
A staple in Baton Rouge, The Chimes is known for its hearty food. Its menu is stacked with everything from blackened alligator to chicken club sandwiches to entrees such as its barbecue shrimp and much, much more. Consistency has been The Chimes’ focus and reason for its staying power as one of the Baton Rouge restaurants visitors must check out.
During the fall and winter season, the restaurant’s seafood gumbo and duck and andouille sausage gumbo become the highlight. The seafood gumbo features shrimp, crab claws, okra and a lighter roux. It’s buttery, flavorful and not too spicy. The duck and andouille sausage gumbo has a darker roux that’s much heartier. Rich is the first word that comes to mind when chowing down on the latter bowl of gumbo. You won’t be reaching for the filé to thicken its broth and the taste is superb. These gumbos reinforce the idea that you can always count on The Chimes to leave you patting your belly with delight. —Matthew Sigur
