Frozen on the rocks

Probably this year’s most obscure Oscar nominee is out now on DVD and Blu-ray. Frozen River is up for Best Original Screenplay, and star Melissa Leo is nominated for Best Actress. Set on the Mohawk reservation that straddles the icy waters of the St. Lawrence River between New York state and Quebec, Frozen River stars Leo as a struggling single mother lured into the dicey world of border smuggling. The cinematography and pacing of this independent gem are reminiscent of works by Terrence Malick and David Gordon Green. Rated R.
