Frame by frame – InstaArtBR show seeks local Instagram shots

The Green Bean Café at Gulf South Solar will host an art show dedicated to Instagram photos later this month.

The InstaArtBR show kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31. The event will include food and drinks provided by Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Jason’s Deli and Fresh Market as well as The Green Bean Café’s signature espresso-infused drinks.

However, the main draw of the show is a photography exhibit plucked from local Instagram accounts.

Anyone can enter photos taken from his or her Instagram account into one of five categories, including #nature, #animals, #people, #cuisine and #abstract.

The show is now accepting entries with the deadline set for Wednesday, Jan. 29. Participants can drop off or mail works to Green Bean Café at 4836 Revere Ave., Suite D., Baton Rouge, LA, 70806.

Only 100 entries will be accepted and they must be original cell phone photos. There is no entry fee for participants, and anyone is welcome to submit works. The photos will need to be printed in a 5×5 or 7×7 format. The show will mount photos on mat boards for participants. A submission form with more information can be found here.

Attendees will vote for their favorites in each category, and the photos will be sold for $10-$40. Proceeds benefit the Louisiana Solar Energy Society.

Jeff Shaw, CEO of Gulf South Solar, is a longtime fan of Instagram and got the idea for the show last year.

“[Instagram] can be used as an art medium,” he says. “I know some people categorize it as a play toy for 12-year-old girls, but I think it’s a great platform for photographers. It removes the gadgets, all the toys, and you’re limited. You have to use your eye.”
