First look at Wes Anderson’s Hotel

New on Blu-ray: Lay the Favorite, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part II, Wreck-It Ralph

Having stormed back last year with the 1960s-set young adult ramble Moonrise Kingdom—his first live action critical darling since 2001’s The Royal Tenenbaums and an Oscar nominee for Best Original Screenplay—all eyes are on what quirky auteur Wes Anderson has in store for audiences with his second period film in a row, the 1920s-Euro comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel.

The Film Stage has scored the first on-set video and photos of the production, shooting now in Germany. The leaks reveal a tuxedoed Owen Wilson, Willem Dafoe on a motorbike, a vintage taxi and a couple of guys dressed in purple overcoats only Anderson would ask his actors to wear.

So what do we know about the film? Anderson newcomer Ralph Fiennes stars as the well-mannered concierge of the titular hotel who finds his life and work challenged by the chaos brought in by string of bizarre guests. The cast is truly Life Aquatic-sized with Jude Law, Saoirse Ronan, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody, Harvey Keitel, Jeff Goldblum, Jason Schwartzman and, of course, Bill Murray all checking in for a stay. But if Anderson centers the story on Fiennes and the hotel itself as a setting, Grand Budapest could prove to be the ultimate diorama for Anderson’s visually resplendent and meticulous style of moviemaking.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is the first film Anderson has written completely on his own and is slated for release in 2014. Watch Anderson discuss Moonrise Kingdom below.
