Duplicity, please

When people first heard about Tony Gilroy’s Michael Clayton, they thought, “Yeah, we’ve seen this before, and it was called Erin Brokovich.” Yet, Gilroy took the old class action lawsuit template and made a thrilling, new kind of mystic drama out of it. Gilroy’s latest is a Mrs. and Smith-style dramedy starring Julia Roberts and Clive Owen (reuniting here after cooking up some chemistry in Mike Nichols’ Closer) as a couple of corporate spies and former lovers who decide to partner secretly to swindle millions from their employers. The con is on, but their relationship remains gleefully on the rocks. Fans of Ocean’s Eleven should love it. Paul Giamatti and Tom Wilkinson co-star. Rated PG-13.
