Du Jour: Nani Dye and Tony Idank, Kickers Barbecue

Kickers Barbecue proprietors Nani Dye and Tony Idank were among the first of the mobile food vendors to hit Baton Rouge over the summer, and this week, the twosome graduated from their familiar trailer to a self-contained coach. Dye says the new ride will enable them to turn out more of their signature smoked pork and homemade sauce, and chili as the weather cools. Dye and Idank are self-described foodies who spent their time cooking and eating out in beloved local spots like Fleur de Lis pizza and the former Carlos’ Mexican Restaurant before taking the plunge as restaurateurs. Dye once owned a retail balloon shop in Baton Rouge, while Idank was a firehouse chef in Houston, famous for his brisket and chili, which won awards at local cook-offs. After an injury, he attended culinary school in Atlanta.
