Don’t call him ‘Carlos’

New on Blu-ray this week is the deluxe Criterion edition of Carlos, Olivier Assayas’ unflinching epic biopic of international terrorist Ilich Ramírez Sanchez, also known as Carlos the Jackal. In the 1970s and 1980s, Sanchez organized bombings, kidnappings and hijackings across the Middle East and Europe. Before his arrest in the 1990s in Sudan, Sanchez appeared to be a charismatic and globetrotting gangster, and The Bourne Ultimatum co-star Edgar Ramirez portrays him as an evil James Bond with a fierce political agenda.
