When it comes to embracing summer in Baton Rouge, you have to know when to say, “Get out of town.”
Enter the day trip, a low-commitment getaway that de-fogs those summer goggles, renews the blue sky and offers, through the area’s universal humid haze, a brand-new set of sights and sounds.

You Jane.
Get your rustic buzz on at the Forest Retreat, where Adirondack-style cabins are stitched into the oak, magnolia and pine tree canvas that surrounds them in Homochitto National Forest, between McComb and Natchez. There’s no Internet and cell service is sketchy, so you’ll feel like you’re a thousand miles away and closer to your partner at the same time. Hiking trails and breathtaking lookouts abound. No kiddos allowed (you wouldn’t want them close to the amazing, lofty open decks that adorn each cabin anyway), so you’ll want to beg the grandparents to keep an eye on the little ones while you reconnect with your sweetheart. $385 for the weekend. forestretreat.com
Get campy.
Maybe you haven’t heard of Meadville, Mississippi. If you own a mountain bike or hiking shoes and like to camp, you owe it to yourself and your family to take the half-day trek there and check out the Clear Springs Recreation Area. Its campground is manicured, with nice restrooms and showers. The campground sits on beautiful, swimmable Clear Spring Lake, which is ringed by a one-mile hiking trail and has a sweet beach. The biking trails are plentiful, ranging from five-mile to 12-mile loops that wind through the Homochitto National Forest. Charming touch: There’s actually a shower for bikes at the trailhead. You’ll want to bring your own food and beverages, though, because there aren’t many restaurants in the area. S’mores are a must. forestcamping.com/dow/southern/homocmp.htm
Grab a cluster of close gal pals and road trip over to Breaux Bridge (where there is actually a bridge that spans the gorgeous, mirror-like Bayou Teche). There, you can browse the charming antique and gift shops on Bridge Street. At historic Café des Amis (pictured), you can catch up on the latest news and nosh on crawfish pie or pecan-crusted catfish, finished by a thick slice of chocolate pecan pie. Looking for an extra culture kick? Visit on Saturday mornings to reel at the restaurant’s weekly Zydeco breakfast. It’s a loud but outrageously fun way to start the weekend. cafedesamis.com
False River generates some controversy among avid fishermen. Some complain about the lack of fish while others say they’ve had great luck snagging trophies in the oxbow. Then again, who ever said the success of a fishing trip rests only on what you catch? Explore the canals around the lake to up your chances of getting a bite worth bragging about, locals say. Finish up at Hot Tails Crawfish House, where the beer selection is steep withlocal micro-brews, the poboys are rich, and the boiled shrimp comes in a sauce you’ll want to drink.
