Crawfish are still plentiful, and now they’re cheap.

Yes, we’re ready for crabs. No, they’re not in. But a late season surge in crawfish means the price has dropped.
A trip to the stalwart, always good Tony’s Seafood on Plank Road last week netted me a darn satisfying afternoon snack, a few pounds of good size, sweet crawfish for $1.99 a pound. End of season, I often find myself looking around, wondering why I didn’t eat more mudbugs. This year, there’s the chance at redemption. There are still plenty of basin crawfish, Tony’s owner Bill Pizzolato reports.
Once $3.99 a pound, live crawfish at Tony’s are now 99 cents. Crabs are late because of some squirelly salinity issues resulting from too much fresh water flowing from the Bonne Carre Spillway, so until those luscious goodies fill up the case of your fish favorite market, enjoy the enduring — and affordable — crawfish harvest.
