Cat Haven creates kitty craze with Furrever Feline

Last weekend went to the dogs as 32 canines found new homes at the premiere Yelp Adoption Day. This weekend, Cat Haven creates a kitty craze with it first-ever Furrever Feline Adopt and Shop-a-thon.

“Last year, over 10,000 pets were killed at EBR Animal Control,” explains Cat Haven board member and event coordinator Peggy Polk. “If one out of 72 people in this area would give a loving, permanent home to a homeless cat or dog, that figure could potentially be reduced to zero. We hope to have a huge turnout of people during this event who will adopt a furry Baton Rougean.”

Each week, Cat Haven brings pets to PetSmart adoptions; however, Furrever Feline offers a distinct advantage—especially for adult cats.

“Of the 30-plus cats in the shelter, only six get to go to weekly adoptions. That means 24 miss their chance that week,” explains Cat Haven President John McChesney. “In addition, many adult cats don’t do well in a caged environment. They get stressed by the people and other cats staring at them and hissing. So, kittens always have the best chance of adoption [at PetSmart].”

The ideal opportunity for adult animals to find their perfect homes comes when they interact with potential owners in a familiar environment.

From 10 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 12 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Cat Haven’s South Harrell’s Ferry shelter hosts live music by Robert Hubbard, refreshments, a boutique and, of course, a tremendous selection of beautiful, rescued and ready-to-be-rehomed cats and kittens. All adoptable animals have all been vaccinated, spayed/neutered, microchipped and FeLeuk/FIV tested.

Furthermore, this inaugural Furrever Feline event presents the preview a very rare breed: Christmas kittens. Cat Haven is now fostering a record 31 kittens who are less than six weeks old and will be ready to go to new homes in December.
