One of Baton Rouge’s more hidden gems is roots and country music fanatic Chris Maxwell’s Red Dragon Listening Room, a not-for-profit venue on Florida Boulevard that regularly books high-profile singer-songwriters like Chuck Brodsky, Guy Clark and David Egan.
Maxwell recently hosted country star Rosanne Cash, fresh off her release of “Lonesome River” to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy, and 225 asked the eldest daughter of music legend Johnny Cash to describe her experience playing in such a unique venue.
“Chris said that performers arrive at the Red Dragon saying, ‘What did my agent get me into?’ and leave saying, ‘Oh God, I can’t wait to do this again—’ words to that effect,” Cash says. “So true. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and it’s a true listening room. The audience was well versed and extremely enthusiastic. And the whole little team, headed by Chris, are a pure pleasure to work with.”
