Bushwood scores in Memphis

Baton Rouge’s own Bushwood BBQ took a team to the Memphis in May International Festival for the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest this past weekend—and came home with what the team dubbed the “No. 1 best brisket in the world.” Owner Justin Page and friends and co-owners Chris Holman, Matt McCollister and John White, are regular competitors at the Memphis event, and placed 5th overall in the beef category with their brisket out of hundreds of competitors—and with no briskets ahead of them on the roster, “that means we’ve got the best brisket in the world,” brags Page.

They had originally planned to enter a rib-eye or tenderloin in the beef category, but Page says, “I really wanted to test what we do in the restaurant every day, and see how it held up against the big boys.” To make sure the brisket came out just right, Page camped by the smoker all night long in a sleeping bag.
