Breakfast double play
When Kolache Kitchen opened its doors in November 2012, Baton Rougeans were introduced to this delicious European pastry often stuffed with sausage, cheese and other breakfast ingredients. On Nicholson Drive across from Tigerland, Kolache Kitchen serves unusual breakfast fare, and its drive-thru window has made it a choice spot for LSU-area residents hungry for something more interesting than a McMuffin. Though Kolache Kitchen’s star item never disappoints, look a little lower on the menu to find a hidden gem: the breakfast taco. You won’t find any rice or beans keeping this particular tortilla company. These handmade soft tacos combine fluffy, zesty scrambled eggs with sausage, bacon, potato or chorizo and a side of homemade salsa.
With the zing of cilantro and a bit of a kick to the house salsa, the breakfast taco makes the perfect fix for a slow-moving fall morning or lunchtime pick-me-up. And at only $2.35 per taco ($2.55 for more than two ingredients), you can stretch that holiday budget a little farther. You might even have a little room for a sweet, fruit-filled kolache as well.
Open daily, 6 a.m.-1 p.m. (Map it!)
