Brave (in theaters June 22)
When in late 2010, Disney announced its intention to stop producing “princess movies,” parents and fans of the animated juggernaut were worried this shift away from fairy tales would mean the end of the Mouse House’s classic era. Those nay-sayers need not worry. This Friday’s Brave—a joint project by Disney and Pixar that premiered recently at the Red Stick Animation Festival in Baton Rouge—is every bit the epic adventure.
Set in a mythical, magical corner of the Scottish Highlands, Brave follows the young, headstrong Merida who, despite her parents’ well-meaning nudges toward social conformity, forges her own path with her blazing curly locks and her Robin Hood-worthy bow at the ready. When a series of ill-equipped suitors fails to impress the teenager, she seeks a spell that will change her fate forever. Boardwalk Empire star Kelly McDonald lends her crisp, hope-filled Scottish accent to Merida, while Billy Connolly, Craig Ferguson and Emma Thompson also voice characters. Rated PG.
