Boris and Constance Navratil’s University Acres garage turned English-style pub

China tankard. This is from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, with ties to the family, and has the lyrics of a song that every “Geordie” knows, a song that is sung lustily in many a pub like ours.

Pewter tankards. In rural pubs the locals’ own tankards were kept at the pub. My sister sent us the three old pewter tankards that hang over the bar. One belonged to my grandfather.

Bass towel. A nephew has a charming pub in the countryside south of Edinburgh and gave us many pub towels and bar pieces, including this one.

Portrait of Lord Nelson. When we moved in 40 years ago we knew that the car garage would one day be transformed into an English pub with walnut paneling, a brick floor and a bay window overlooking a paved courtyard. While Boris, the master carpenter, worked on weekends, we collected items like pub paintings, Vanity Fair original cartoons, and antique horse brasses. On Oct. 18, 2005, we had a grand celebration in the pub to celebrate the victory of Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. We added his portrait, our namesake, above the bar. ?
