Blue Dog takes the spotlight
The LSU Museum of Art in the Shaw Center kicks off a unique show this weekend that displays the talent of one of Louisiana’s most recognizable artists, George Rodrigue. Blue Dogs and Cajuns on the River features over eighty original paintings and sculptures that illustrate the progression of Rodrigue’s forty-year career and reveal the origins of his iconic Blue Dog. The exhibition includes a series of Rodrigue’s famous Blue Dog paintings from the New Orleans Museum of Art, as well as signature works from local collectors and the artist’s personal collection. The exhibit opens to the public on Saturday at 9 a.m. and runs through September 18, but don’t miss some of the opening weekend events. At 11 a.m., you and your kids can meet Rodrigue himself and learn how to draw the blue dog from the master—followed by a reading of Are You Blue Dog’s Friend? by Rodrigue’s wife, Wendy. A book signing will follow at 1 p.m. in the atrium. And on Sunday, see the artist create a new Blue Dog artwork as his wife, Wendy, provides insight into his career and the rich process which goes into each new piece of artwork.
