Beautiful Creatures (in theaters Thursday)

With the blockbuster Harry Potter series in the rearview mirror, Warner Bros. is banking on author Kami Garcia’s mystical, teen angst-riddled Beautiful Creatures series to creatively and financially pick up where the boy wizard left off.

Directed by The Bridges of Madison County and The Horse Whisperer scribe Richard LaGravanese, Beautiful Creatures stars relative newcomer—but Spielberg and Coppola favorite—Alden Ehrenreich as a young man desperate to leave his small country town behind. His world is flipped upside down by the arrival of Lena, a mysterious new girl who draws him into a world filled with bizarre characters, light and dark magic and vivid dreams that could unlock the secret to his hidden past and crucial future.

Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum and Jeremy Irons co-star. Rated PG-13.
