Beat the heat with low-cal treats
The summer in Baton Rouge is in full swing, with the sidewalk radiating enough heat to fry an egg. Ice cream is a favorite frosty treat to stay cool in the annual summer swelter, but too much can impact your swimsuit figure. Fortunately, our city has plenty of frozen delights that are light on calories but not taste. Gelato: Latte e Miele’s Bocage dessert bar isn’t set to open for another few months, so for now, Baton Rougeans have to trek to their location just outside of the city limits, or keep an eye on Twitter to see when their truck is rolling out. Still, it’s worth it for a sweet bite of one of their ever-rotating basket of fresh fruit flavors—especially the fresh-made sorbettos, which pack a ton of taste for less than 90 calories a serving. Other local bakeries and stores serve up the sweet Italian answer to ice cream, including Ambrosia Bakery, Baum’s, and Whole Foods, so keep your eyes peeled. Frozen yogurt: The Red Stick is in the midst of a fro-yo boom, with a new self-serve spot popping up seemingly on every street corner. Tutti Frutti, Swirll, Red Mango, Splendido!, Bosco’s, Menchie’s—and that’s just to name a few! Frozen yogurt isn’t just lighter—some locations, like Tutti Frutti and Splendido!—serve mixes that contain probiotics, microorganisms that helps with healthy digestion. Some frozen yogurt isn’t merely better for you than ice cream—it’s just plain good for you. Stick to a small serving of fruit-based fro-yo and you’re looking at only around 100 calories a cup. Smoothies: Smoothie King may rule the smoothie scene in Baton Rouge, but they’ve got some competition coming—Cali-based smoothie franchise Jamba Juice is already planning several Baton Rouge stores. But they’ve been beaten to the punch by local fave CC’s, who are rolling out a menu of smoothies for the summer. In peach, banana and strawberry flavor, they’re filling enough to make a lunch on the go at between 250-365 calories.
