Arts: Best Bets

You wouldn’t think the world of church organ music would be rife with controversy, but that was before Cameron Carpenter entered the scene. The 32-year-old Julliard-trained pipe organist is known not just for his sequined shirts and wild hairstyles, but also his penchant for taking liberties with classic compositions and traditional organ-playing techniques. He designed his own pipe organ during a residency at the Middle Collegiate Church in New York City, champions the merits of virtual organs to make the music more accessible and even wears specially designed shoes to help his toes tap dance over the foot pedals.

His talents will be on full display when he meets the pipe organ at St. Joseph’s Cathedral downtown Nov. 16 as part of the Manship on the Move series. manshiptheatre.org
