Argo (in theaters Friday)

Based loosely on recently declassified CIA documents, this Friday’s Argo blends spy thrills and Hollywood comedy in one truly bizarre rescue mission that occurred at the height of the Iranian revolution in the late 1970s. Directed by and starring Ben Affleck, Argo details a high stakes operation to smuggle a group of Americans stranded in Iran during that country’s violent upheaval. Posing as a Canadian film crew shooting a cheap Star Wars knock-off—titled after the vessel of Jason and the Argonauts from Greek mythology—a team of undercover CIA agents is allowed into Tehran as they devise a scheme to bring the U.S. citizens back with them to safety. Affleck, who previously directed The Town and Gone Baby Gone, ups his ambitions as a filmmaker with this fast-paced and authentic period picture and a talented cast that includes Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston, Kyle Chandler and John Goodman. Rated R.
