Animated Turbo leads busy weekend at the movies – Is this the summer when animated films rule the box office?

Is this the summer when animated films rule the box office? It certainly appears so. Outside of Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel, the only reliable hits have been the computer-animated movies Despicable Me 2 and Monsters University. And even those films were part of larger franchises. This week, Dreamworks Animation is bringing an original (whew!) animated film to the silver screens. Turbo focuses on a snail who dreams of being the greatest racer in the world. The voice cast makes this one promising and includes turns from Ryan Reynolds (who also stars in this weekend’s R.I.P.D.), Paul Giamatti and Samuel L. Jackson. However, with three other major films opening, this weekend’s box office is anyone’s game, including the undisputed champ, Despicable Me 2. Rated PG. Check out the trailer below.
