Anchorman’s away
A decade after launching TV news and, more specifically, gender equality backwards a generation, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues sees not-so-classy newscaster Ron Burgundy arrive in New York City, plucked from his partial infamy in the greater San Diego market to join the nation’s first 24-hour news network—one desperate for ratings-grabbing on-air personalities.
Through DVD sales and a generation of college students quoting his absurdist non sequiturs, Will Ferrell’s dimwitted blowhard has only grown in stature since arriving fully formed and abstractly offensive in 2004’s original, but with a string of cameos too cute by half and more “great Odin’s raven” outbursts, will too much Anchorman be too much of a good thing?
Fans should eagerly await Ferrell going a second round with witty sparring partner Christina Applegate, but as the hapless news team of Ron, Champ, Brick and Brian hits the mean streets of the Big Apple, will Burgundy still be “kind of a big deal?” Perhaps with a little scotchy, scotch, scotch, it may not matter. Anchorman 2 arrives Dec. 20.
