American Masters celebrates 20th century; exhibit opens Friday

-

Take a break from the heat and humidity and treat yourself to an afternoon at the LSU Museum of Art. The latest exhibit to hit the museum’s walls include a selection of nearly 40 paintings from the Mari and James Michener Collection at the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas in Austin. This collection of American masters traces the development of 20th century American painting from the gritty realism of Robert Henri to the startling pop art of Robert Indiana to the experimental abstraction of Alan Cote. The show starts Friday, June 27, and hangs through Nov. 30. (Pictured left: John Sloan’s Carol with Blue Ribbon, 1913 oil on canvas. Courtesy Mari and James A. Michener)
