All things Scottish

Sheep dogs, bagpipes, burly men in kilts. It must be time for the Highland Games of Louisiana. Nestled in the small Feliciana town of Jackson (about a half-hour drive north of Baton Rouge), the Highland Games is Nov. 14-16 and features music by Smithfield Fair and Scottish fiddler John Taylor, folk dance competitions, caber-tossing and mini-golf for the “wee bairns.” Watch as athletes from the Northern and Southern United States go bicep-to-bicep in traditional Scottish competitions such as the hammer, sheaf toss and the putting of the stone—a real sight to see. If you think you have what it takes to sling bales of hay in the air as high as a flagpole, show up at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 14 for the open competition. Games and entertainment all day Saturday. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 6 to 12; group discounts available. lahighlandgames.com
