Et Cetera Wine Company ETC

Chardonnay • 2009

California • $12

The Et Cetera Wine Co. is a collaborative project among four childhood friends: Mark Beringer, David Duckhorn, Harry Merlo and Matt Miller. Each grew up in a winegrowing family of northern California. Their new venture produces wines under two labels, including this one, ETC, which is all about approachability. Cool-fermented in stainless steel, this 100% Chardonnay comprises grapes from California’s north and central coasts. Its nose features tropical fruit, and on the palate, look for apple, pear and citrus. Its acidity makes it a great match for seafood but also a hit with maple-glazed pork chops, a cheese course or retro ladies’ lunch fare like chicken tetrazzini.

Babcock

Red Table Wine

Santa Barbara County • $10

The bulk of Bryan Babcock’s boutique terroir-driven lineup is pricey, but this Rhone-style red table wine is a terrific value and a nice everyday find. Described by the winemaker as a “full-bodied, silky red,” it has a nice oomph and a berry fruit flavor thanks to the blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Great poolside with guacamole burgers, chicken fajitas or pizza with caramelized onions and gorgonzola.

Rocca delle Macie

Vernaccia di San Gimignano

2009 • $14

From the DOCG Vernaccia di San Gimignano, this Tuscan white is crisp and perfect for long, hot summers. On the nose, look for floral notes. The palate presents good fruit, and the finish is just biting enough to give this wine the heft it needs to handle vegetable dishes. Bring it to your favorite vegetarian host or serve it with your own veggie favorites. Fried zucchini blossoms, caponata or asparagus risotto will all pair well. It also performs nicely as an aperitif.
