A home for the holidays for shelter pets
This weekend, two events seek to find shelter pets a home for the holidays and beyond:
Claws for celebration: Furrever Feline II
From 10 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Cat Haven’s South Harrell’s Ferry shelter hosts its second major adoption event of the season with shelter tours, a boutique and, of course, beautiful, rescued and ready-to-be-rehomed cats and kittens.

The event also helps shoppers indulge feline friends—furry and human—with great gifts from candles, festive clothing, artwork, jewelry, fun cat things and Christmas decorations to a funky flamingo Christmas tree. All funds from the Furrever Feline boutique are dedicated to building a spay/neuter clinic for stray cats and pets of low-income families.
Among the tabbies and calicos, Furrever Feline presents a very rare breed: Christmas kittens. Cat Haven is now fostering a record number kittens who are ready to go to new homes for the holidays. All adoptable animals have all been vaccinated, spayed/neutered, microchipped and FeLeuk/FIV tested.
Catting around town now been made even easier with Cat Haven’s expanded adoption hours. The shelter is now open for adoptions from 4 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday. The non-profit still offers adoptions at PetSmart on Airline Highway and Siegen Lane from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and has just added 1 to 4 p.m. adoptions at the Siegen location on the second and fourth Sundays of the month.

A jolly old Yelp
Over the summer, Baton Rouge Area Foundation (BRAF) assembled a consortium of animal rescue groups to create No Kill BR, a citywide initiative to insure no healthy adoptable animal is euthanized.
While a comprehensive blueprint is still in the works, Commercial Properties Realty Trust (a branch of the BRAF), Petz Plaza and other sponsors devised Yelp Adoption Days to make East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Control shelter dogs more accessible to potential adopters by showcasing them at multiple locations around town.
If your family has been hounding to get a furry pet, adorable, adoptable dogs are available at:
• 5321 Corporate Boulevard (former Chase Bank Building) on Friday from 12 to 5 p.m. and;
• 5514 Main Street in Zachary (the parking lot next to Chili’s and Office Depot) on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Besides being temperament tested and examined by a veterinarian, all of the Yelp dogs have been vaccinated, spayed/neutered, microchipped and heartworm tested. The adoption fee is just $70.
