A golden opportunity to adopt great dogs and cats

This week, Companion Animal Alliance (CAA) launches its Good as Gold adoption event. From October 15 through 31, the adoption fee for all gold-colored dogs, puppies, cats and kittens are reduced to $50. For the fee, qualified adopters receive a gorgeous ginger companion who is microchipped and up-to-date on vaccinations, heartworm and flea prevention. In addition, each adoption also includes a bag of Solid Gold treats.

“These precious pets are worth their weight in gold,” says Executive Director Kim Sherlaw. “We’re giving Baton Rougeans a golden opportunity to save a life and add a great pet to their families.”

The promotion is part of an initiative to expedite the time between animals’ entry into the shelter and their adoption by a loving family. As a municipal, taxpayer-funded facility, the East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Shelter must accept all stray animals plucked from city streets as well as those dumped at the doorstep by their owners. Each month, approximately 800 animals arrive at the shelter, which has a capacity of 250.

Since August 2010, CAA has been contracted by the Metro Council to manage the East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Shelter. With the help of committed and aggressive rescue organizations and the heroic efforts of its own staff, CAA has decreased its euthanasia rate from 80% to 50%. But, the non-profit constantly strives to save more lives.

CAA hosts dogs and cat adoption at the East Baton Rouge Animal Shelter near the airport at 2680 Progress Road. The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. On Thursday, the shelter remains open until 7 p.m.

These are among the golden pets available for adoption.
