A different kind of dance

We focus a lot on smart growth on this blog, and instances where the arts scene in Baton Rouge and the smart growth movement intersect. But we recognize sometimes you don’t always want to think hard about long-term planning issues, and instead just want to see something visually compelling and, well, cool.

Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre is bringing it next week, in the form of a visit from Salt Lake City’s Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company. Incorporating multimedia works, props and lighting effects, this isn’t your average traveling dance group and it’s a testament to BRBT’s ability to attract some fascinating and innovative artists. “They are a little different than anything we’ve had in Baton Rouge before,” says Nicole Naquin, development and communications director.

Check out one of their performances, using ribbon-like props, here:

And another with some interesting shadow dances:

Ririe-Woodbury (pronounced Rye-Ree) performs at the River Center Theatre Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. The dance company is also hosting master modern dance classes at the Dancers’ Workshop earlier in the week as well as demonstrations in two local public schools.
